The 「2018 Jeonnam International SUMUK Biennale」 will be held in Mokpo and Jindo for two months from September 1 to October 31.
Jeollanam-do Province is where the Namjonghwa (Southern School Literati Painting) of Korea originated and the traditions of ink wash painting have been best maintained.
The footsteps of the masters of ink wash painting including Gongjae Yun Du-seo, Sochi Hoe Ryeon and Namnong Heo Geon can be found in the province. Based on such historical and cultural basis, Jeollanam-do aims to promote ink wash painting and cultivate it as global cultural content.
The 「2018 Jeonnam International SUMUK Biennale」 is the first step to such endeavors.
The works of artists from Korea, China, Japan and other countries will be exhibited to rediscover the value of ink wash painting and promote its mass appeal far and wide. The 「2018 Jeonnam International SUMUK Biennale」 is different from the conventional biennales which are held in closed spaces. It will be an “open festival” that connects various regions and uses the entire city as an enormous exhibition venue.
2018 marks the 1,000th anniversary of Jeolla-do Province
We ask for your support and attendance to make the next millennium of Jeolla-do Province even more brilliant with the 「2018 Jeonnam International SUMUK Biennale」.
Acting Jeollanamdo Governor
